Frequently Asked Questions About CNC Routing

We have over 10 years of experience in CNC routing collaboration. During this service process, our clients often have various questions. We have compiled the most common ones here, hoping they will be helpful to you.

What is the main difference between CNC Routing and CNC Milling?

CNC Routing is optimized for high-speed, efficient cutting, grooving, and engraving of large sheet materials (like full sheets of wood, plastic, composite panels). It acts like a "tailor" and "engraver" combined, using high-power spindles and fast-moving gantries. It excels at handling non-metallic materials (wood, MDF, acrylic, foam) and some soft metals (like aluminum), making it ideal for signs, furniture, architectural interiors, and advertising displays.
CNC Milling is designed for high-precision, complex 3D geometric parts from metals or hard plastics. It acts like a "master engraver," using smaller, more precise tools to carve intricate parts with tight tolerances from solid blocks, commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and medical industries for precision components.

What is the maximum thickness CNC Routing can handle?

This is crucial for project feasibility. Our standard CNC router worktable size is 4ft x 8ft (approx. 1220mm x 2440mm), capable of handling a full standard sheet. For larger parts, we can process them via panel joinery methods – consult our engineers.
Regarding thickness, our standard machining capability reaches up to 3 inches (approx. 76mm). For thicker solid wood or special materials, we need to evaluate tooling and process feasibility case-by-case.

What key design parameters should I consider (e.g., minimum hole size, minimum fillet)?

Recommended formats: 2D vector files like DXF, DWG, AI, EPS; 3D model files like STEP, STL, IGES. PDFs or high-quality images are also acceptable as references but may incur conversion fees.

Key design advice:

Minimum Hole Diameter: Recommended to be no less than 1/4 of the material thickness.
Internal Corners: Avoid sharp corners; design them as fillets (recommended radius no less than 1.5mm) because cutting tools are cylindrical.
Text Engraving: Ensure font and stroke width are suitable for tool size; overly fine details may not engrave clearly.
Material Utilization: Consider standard sheet sizes during design; optimizing nesting can save costs.

What is the typical lead time from order to delivery?

Clear timelines help manage client expectations. Lead times depend on project complexity, quantity, and current production schedule. A typical timeline is:
Prototype/Small Batch (1-10 pcs): Can ship within 3-7 business days after file confirmation.
Medium Batch: Typically within 1-3 weeks.
Large Batch or Highly Complex Projects: Require individual assessment.

Do you offer assembly services?

Yes, we offer comprehensive post-processing services, including:
Basic Processing: Sanding, deburring, edge finishing.
Surface Finishing: Painting (matte/gloss), veneering, laminating, staining, polishing.
Functional Treatments: Sealing, waterproofing, flame-retardant coating.
Assembly & Packaging: Multi-part assembly, customized secure packaging.
You can directly select desired finishing options during the quoting process.
